Makar Sankranti is the day when the divine night ends and the day starts. It is the beginning of an auspicious time. A great highlight of this harvest festival is Kite flying.
Kite-flying has always been a way of expressing one’s happiness on this occasion. Still, no one realizes that their skies of celebration are turned into death fields for the local and migratory bird population. An estimate from a bird rescuer shows over 2000 birds getting injured during these times with a death of over 500 in Ahmedabad alone.
The sharp Chinese manjha, (a synthetic kite string coated in glass or metal) is extremely harzardous for these innocent creatures.
This Makar Sankranti let’s pledge to
1. Use soft cotton threads
2. Fly kites in open ground
3. Avoid flying kites before 9am or after 5 pm
4. Take injured birds to animal welfare centres.
Happy Makar Sankranti!!
